The story behind the nickname:
Your Great Grandma Sapienza would call for Grandpap to come home. With her Italian accent Grandpaps friends thought she was calling him Sundie or Sunday...the name stuck (as most nicknames do)

My Brother by Frank L. Sapienza
First to enter the sevice was my brother Sundie. He was a member of the 107th Field Artillery Band, and before the Pearl Harbor attack, the 107th was activated and sent to Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania. When Pearl Harbor was attacked, they beame part of the United States Army.
Sundie transferred to the U. S. Air Force, and was sent to Jefferson Barracks in Missouri. After a course in mechanic school, he was sent to the Boeing B17 Mechanic School, he became a Crew Chief of a B17 Bomber Squadron, and was shipped to North Africa, and later to Italy where his planes participated in strategic bombing raids in World War II. He served five years overseas.
After he was discharged, he excelled as a printing pressman at Carnegie Institute Press, and later in the book Binding Department. He married Catherine Smith on Saturday, June 7, 1947 at Saint James church, Wilkinsburgh, Pa., and they raised six children William, who passed away on Wednesday, September 28, 1988 and Concetta, Michael, Raymond, Carol and Catherine. His wife Catherine passed away, on Sunday, September 15th, 1976.
